Phoebe Haines

Phoebe Haines is an award-winning British Mezzo Soprano, with vocal qualities that have been variously hailed as ‘extraordinary’ (The Times), ‘silvery’ (The Evening Standard), ‘impressive’ (The Los Angeles Times), and ‘opulent’ (Sunday Times Culture). Phoebe studied at the University of Cambridge where she obtained a Double 1st, completing her MMus and Fellowship at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Phoebe has captivated audiences in thirty-two countries, and the list continues to grow. As a Young Artist, Phoebe has apprenticed with companies including The Salzburg Festival, Aldeburgh Music, English National Opera, Opéra de Baugé, Center for Contemporary Opera, Clonter Opera, Songfest Los Angeles, and has appeared as a soloist with such wide- ranging orchestras as the Camerata Salzburg, the China Film Orchestra, and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra.

Recent international performance venues include Shanghai Symphony Orchestra Hall, the Suzhou Grand Theatre, the Royal Palace of Bucharest, Beijing's National Center for Performing Arts,

Phoebe made her Chinese debut in 2016, when she was selected as the UK Representative at iSING! International Artists Festival. Phoebe returned to iSING! Festival in Summer 2018, touring with the Suzhou Symphony Orchestra under Maestro Dane Lam. Later in the season, Phoebe appeared as a featured artist in a number of musical programmes on Jiangsu TV, and China’s premier channel, CCTV.

In 2021, Phoebe looks forward to an international tour alongside world- renowned French pianist, Stephanie Elbaz, in which they will concertize with the world’s most expensive 24k gold piano, by French piano-maker Gary Pons. She makes her debut with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, singing Carmen arias at the Henley Festival/ Classic FM in July 2021.

Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild (France), Giardini La Mortella (Italy), Villa Del Balbianello (Italy), Montreux Jazz Festival (Switzerland), Topping Rose House (New York’s Hamptons), the Bulgarian, Lebanese, and American Embassies in London, and many British Embassies around the world. Phoebe was honoured to sing for the CSSAUK Chinese New Year Gala at Sadler’s Wells Theatre in January 2019, and hosted the 2020 Chinese Embassy Gala at Central Hall, Westminster.

Phoebe has been fortunate to sing alongside Chinese artists of great renown, including Operatic Bass, Hao Jiang Tian 田浩江 , and famous pop singer, Ping An 平安. Under the tutelage of famed Pipa/Guqin player, Dr. Cheng Yu, 2020 will see Phoebe performing in a number of chamber music concerts most recent concert with UK Chinese Music Ensemble and London Youlan Qin Society received critical acclaim from both local and international press. alongside well-known exponents of traditional Chinese music in the UK. Having trained at English National Opera in 2015, Phoebe is delighted to continue her association with the company as a Vocal Mentor, working with the Youth Programme on a number of educational projects. Phoebe made her stage debut at the London Coliseum for ENO’s 50 year anniversary gala, ‘Opera for All’ in October 2018.

A sought-after public speaker, Phoebe has given talks on subjects from Mozart to Britten for organisations including the International Women’s Forum, the Cadogan Hall, and the London Festival of Song. She is passionate about her work with Streetwise Opera.

Phoebe is a two-time bursary winner of the International Opera Awards Foundation, and opened the 2014 Awards Ceremony.

Phoebe was extremely fortunate to be a student of the late Sanford Sylvan’s for two years, in 2016 and 2017. She currently studies with garlanded Australian soprano, Jennifer McGregor, in London.

Phoebe was made a Fellow of the Sino-British Fellowship Trust in 2016 and 2018, and was awarded the Kathleen Whitaker Bequest in 2019. She is a member of the London School of Economics Confucius Institute for Business London, mentored by Dr. Hong Lu OBE. Phoebe is a proud volunteer for CEDP Chinese Centre, and is passionate about her continued work in the field of UK-Chinese cultural relations.
